Role Description
The Senior Laboratory Technician is responsible for overseeing the genomics and analytical testing components of the laboratory, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements. This role involves managing daily lab operations, developing and validating analytical methods, maintaining laboratory accreditation, and supporting R&D initiatives within the industry.
Lab Operations & Management
- Oversee daily operations of the genomics and analytical testing labs.
- Maintain lab equipment and manage inventory of supplies.
- Develop and enforce SOPs, safety protocols, and regulatory compliance.
Genomics & Molecular Biology
- Oversee DNA/RNA extraction, genotyping, and molecular screening workflows.
- Implement and optimize protocols for marker-assisted selection and genetic testing.
- Support breeding programs with validated molecular assays and bioinformatics insights.
- Ensure quality control and regulatory compliance in genomic workflows.
Analytical Chemistry & Testing
- Develop and validate methods for the analysis of bioactive compounds and potential contaminants in plant-derived materials.
- Secondary metabolite profiling and quantification (experience with LC-DAD, GC-FID, GC-MS)
- Ensure ISO/GMP compliance across all analytical workflows.
- Oversee routine instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.
Compliance & Quality Assurance
- Maintain ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation and manage quality systems.
- Prepare documentation for audits and regulatory submissions.
- Coordinate with external laboratories for specialized testing as needed.
- Participate in proficiency testing and uphold data integrity.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Manage and mentor a growing lab team; oversee training and performance.
- Collaborate with R&D, breeding teams, and external partners.
- Contribute to research initiatives, grants, and scientific communications.
- Foster a positive, collaborative lab culture aligned with team values.
- Provide data-driven insights to support breeding and R&D initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
- PhD or MSc in Molecular Biology, Genomics, Analytical Chemistry, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a laboratory management role, preferably in the academic or agricultural biotechnology sector.
- A strong specialisation in either genomics or analytics.
- Proficiency in genomic techniques, including next-generation sequencing (NGS), PCR/qPCR, and genotyping assays.
- Strong expertise in metabolite profiling methodology and method development.
- Experience with laboratory accreditation (ISO 17025) and regulatory compliance.
- Proven leadership and team management skills.
